Why Hickory

A small city with a regional job base

Hickory got its start as Hickory Tavern, a tavern Henry Robinson ran under a big hickory tree near a stagecoach crossing. The town was first chartered in 1863, took the name Hickory in 1873 and became a city in 1889. It grew on furniture and hosiery mills, and today the area is known for making fiber-optic cable. Corning Optical Communications, CommScope and Prysmian are all among the county's largest employers.

It's the hub of a four-county metro. The city counted 43,490 residents in the 2020 Census and an estimated 45,975 by 2025, and the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton metro area is home to more than 365,000 people. Hickory has been named an All-America City three times: 1967, 1987 and 2007.

Getting around is easy. I-40 runs along the south side of town with six Hickory exits, and US-321 runs north toward Lenoir and Boone and south toward Gastonia. Uptown Charlotte is about 58 miles away, and Asheville is about 75 miles west.

Historic homes near downtown. Hickory has four historic districts on the National Register: Kenworth, Oakwood, Claremont High School and Hickory Southwest Downtown.

Lake living. Lake Hickory runs along the north side of the city, with waterfront neighborhoods like Moores Ferry and Governors Harbour.
